Laurel & Hardy

Like many other blogs, a mixture of book reviews, links I found interesting, comments on the day's news.

44 New Things #9 - Patron of the Arts

This week, I became a patron of the arts, supporting a scholarship for art students and getting 2 prints to decorate my new office. Each year, the Art Department on campus holds the Norma Seibert Printmaking Patron Night - for a donation to the scholarship fund, patrons get 2 prints, one from an invited artist and one from a student. The prints this year are pretty cool - local artist Bill Shumway was the invited artist and Jeremy Kortlever was the student. They each chose a crow theme independently of each other (click on the photos for a larger view).

44 New Things #8 - Butterflies & Blues 2

Today I walked to the Irish Bend Covered Bridge east of campus for the Butterflies & Blues event - a blues duo and a poetry reading. The musicians were supposed to be Plaehn / Hino, but one of them was sick. Bill Lanham substituted at the last minute - he used to work for one of the university departments located in the library, so I knew him. It was nice to see him again, and the music was great. The poet (Alison Hawthorne Deming) wasn't really to my taste. There were about 30 people there to hear the event, plus a lot of folks biking and walking past (the path is very popular on the weekends - it connects up with the Bald Hill paths.
